Math 8 Benchmarks
*Benchmark MA8.1: Students will apply their knowledge of powers of ten to convert into and out of scientific notation.
MA8.1.1 Write and identify powers of ten using exponents.
MA8.1.2 Multiply numbers by powers of ten.
MA8.1.3 Write numbers in scientific notation.


*Benchmark MA8.2: Students will perform operations on rational numbers, inlcuding negative numbers.
MA8.2.1 Convert between the decimal, fraction, and percent forms for rational numbers.
MA8.2.2 Compute sums and differences of rational numbers.
MA8.2.3 Compute products and quotients of rational numbers.
MA8.2.4 Apply order of operations to rational numbers, and evaluate expressions by substituting for variables.


*Benchmark MA8.3: Students will write and solve equations and inequalities for rational numbers.
MA8.3.1 Write and solve equations in the form ax = b, x + a = b, ax + b = c for rational numbers.
MA8.3.2 Write and solve inequalities in the form ax < b, x + a < b, ax + b < c for rational numbers.
MA8.3.3 Write and solve equations and inequalities in the form ax + b = cx + d for rational numbers.
MA8.3.4 Write and solve proportions in the form a/b = c/d for rational numbers.


*Benchmark MA8.4: Students will determine the surface area and volume of three-dimensional figures.
MA8.4.1 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the unknown side of the right triangle.
MA8.4.2 Find the area of parallelograms and trapezoids.
MA8.4.3 Find the surface area of prisms, cylinders, and spheres.
MA8.4.4 Find the volume of prisms, cylinders and spheres.
MA8.4.5 Apply the appropriate formula / process to a given situation.


*Benchmark MA8.5: Students will apply transformations and size changes (dilations) to figures.
MA8.5.1 Perform dilations (expansions and contractions) to figures on a coordinate plane.
MA8.5.2 Draw the reflection image of a figure over a line, and determine the number of symmetry lines in a figure.
MA8.5.3 Create and describe translations (graph slides).


*Benchmark MA8.6: Students will apply geometric rules for determining the measure of angles in a figure.
MA8.6.1 Recongize and use the symbols for parallelism, equal angles, and right angles.
MA8.6.2 Use supplementary angles, vertical angles, corresponding angles, alternate interior, and alternate exterior angles to find measures of angles.
MA8.6.3 Use the Triangle Sum Property to find measures of angles.


*Benchmark MA8.7: Students will determine the probabilities of mutually exclusive, overlapping, and independent events.
MA8.7.1 Determine the number of permutations and combinations for an event.
MA8.7.2 Calculate the probability of mutually exclusive (disjoint), overlapping events, and complementary events.
MA8.7.3 Calculate the probability of independent and dependent events (multiple probabilities).
MA8.7.4 Apply the appropriate process to a given situation.
